The Hero's Quest
In any epic, the main character usually completes a series of ten steps. However, In the Adventures of Ulysses, the first steps take place in the Iliad, the book preceding The Adventures of Ulysses. The following is a list of the ten steps as well as where and when they occurred in the story.

In the Illiad, the god Zeus came down and called to Ulysses to ask him to participate and fight in the Trojan war.

At first, after Zeus asks Ulysses to fight in the war, Ulysses refuses to participate because he wants to stay with his family.

Ulysses accepts the call when he made the agreement to always protect Helen and her husband.

In the story, this step occurs many times. First, when he starts sailing on the sea. The sea is an undiscovered and wild place, and he has no idea what is in store for him. Each time Ulysses lands on an island he enters an unknown place as well.

In the Adventures of Ulysses, there are many supernatural beings. This includes gods, goddesses, demigods, nymphs, monsters, cyclopses and more. Ulysses has many run-ins, most near-death with these supernatural beings.

Step Eight- Tests to prove worthiness of the quest and moments of doubt
In this epic, Ulysses does not usually doubt himself. However, at certain times in the story he does seem to give up on his goal of finally reaching home. For example, at Circe's castle, Ulysses seems to not want to leave and wants to stay there forever. Nevertheless, Ulysses eventually realizes that it is best for him to sail for Ithaca.

In the final chapter of this epic, The Return, Ulysses begins to sail home from Nausicaa's island. However, when Ulysses reaches home he is unable to immediately restore his power. This is because there are hundreds of "thievish nobles" who are living there. They are forcing Ulysses's wife into marriage and are threatening to kill Telemachus. But, the nobles are all unaware that Ulysses still lives.
